Case 04 · Illustrative case · In progress

I keep hiding my best work. Why does being seen feel dangerous?

The cost of staying invisible: a route toward work that carries his own name.

Designer · 36

A pencil and gold ink sketch: a man at a drafting desk with his drawings turned away, a pen signing a page, two people holding a quiet tango embrace, and an open doorway full of light, joined by one gold route.

The four portals are stages of transformation, not four individual sessions.

Portal ITime frame: Weeks 1 to 4

    The Hermit

Met the fear of being seen

    What we looked at
We mapped the request with the Inner Forces map and traced each moment his work was about to be shown: a delay, a handover, a colleague presenting it for him.
    Movement work
Tango, chosen because the embrace leaves nowhere to hide and a partner feels every hesitation at once.
    Experiment
Once a week, he kept his name on one piece of work he would normally have passed on unsigned.
    Review point
At week four we reviewed which moments of hiding he could now catch as they happened, and which still slipped past him.

    Key insight

Hiding had once protected him. The danger he felt belonged to an old scene, not to the meeting room.

He came with a precise complaint. His ideas reached the client, but always in someone else's hands. He finished the strongest part of a project, then found a reason to be absent on the day it was presented. Colleagues were promoted for work he had shaped.

In psychoanalytic consultation and on the Inner Forces map, we followed what happened in the minutes before he could be seen. His breathing tightened, his attention moved to what was still wrong with the work, and he offered it to someone else "to finish". He called this modesty. Looking more closely, he found an older rule: in his family, the child who stood out drew a kind of attention that was not safe.

Tango became the first laboratory. In the embrace there is nowhere to hide, and a partner feels every hesitation at once. We watched how his gaze dropped to the floor when the music began, and how his weight withdrew the instant he was expected to propose a step. We brought each of these observations straight back into consultation.

Between sessions, the experiment was small: keep his name on one piece of work each week. The aim was not to manufacture confidence. It was to let him notice the fear without obeying it at once.

    The Magician

Took back the work as his own

    What we looked at
We looked at whose standard he measured his work against, and found a senior colleague he admired and quietly handed his ideas to.
    Movement work
In tango he began to lead: proposing a step with intention and letting his partner answer, instead of waiting to be guided.
    Experiment
He presented one design himself, from first sketch to final decision, and noted each moment he wanted to pass it on.
    Review point
At week ten we set what he had predicted for the presentation beside what actually happened in it.

    Key insight

The authority he had placed in his colleague was partly his own. Taking it back was frightening, and possible.

As the fear became easier to recognise, another figure came into view. There was a senior colleague whose judgement he trusted more than his own. Every idea went to her first. If she approved, the idea was real. If she hesitated, he dropped it before anyone else could see it.

The respect was genuine, but it carried a projection. Through consultation and Gestalt work, he separated what he actually knew about her from the clarity and nerve he had placed onto her. Some of the eye he admired in her was his own, kept at a safe distance.

We asked a practical question: what would he defend in this design if she were not in the room?

In tango, the work moved from following to leading. To lead is to make a proposal with the whole body and then let the other person answer. He found that his steps were small and apologetic, and that his partner could not follow a step he had not quite decided to take. We looked at the same pattern in his emails and in the way he opened a presentation.

He then presented one design himself, from first sketch to final decision. It was uncomfortable. It was also the first piece of work in years that everyone in the room knew was his.

    Strength

Held the gaze and named his value

    What we looked at
We examined what being seen would cost him in practice: open disagreement, criticism of his work, and a conversation about pay he had postponed for two years.
    Movement work
Tango again, now with the pause: holding the embrace through a still moment in the music without filling it or looking away.
    Experiment
He asked to lead a project and, in his review, stated the salary he wanted instead of waiting for an offer.
    Review point
We reviewed the route once a month, adjusting the next step to what the previous one had actually produced.

    Key insight

Being seen includes being judged. He could hear a judgement without disappearing from it.

The third stage turned visibility from a feeling into a set of decisions. He wanted to lead a project, and he wanted to be paid for the work he was already doing. Both meant stepping into rooms where he would be looked at, questioned and possibly refused.

We worked with the anger that had been turning against him. Whenever his work was criticised, he did not argue. He withdrew, then spent the evening dismantling himself. In consultation he began to notice the moment when a question about the design became, inside him, a verdict on his right to exist in the room.

Tango offered a precise exercise for this. In the pause, when the music holds, the couple stays in the embrace and nobody moves. He learned to remain there: not rushing into the next step, not dropping his eyes, not collapsing his posture. We brought that stillness into rehearsals for difficult conversations.

He asked to lead a project and received a qualified yes, with conditions he had to negotiate. In his review he named a figure. The answer was not the one he hoped for, and he stayed in the conversation long enough to agree a date to return to it.

    The Sun

Making visibility a way of working

    What we looked at
We are looking at which structures keep his work visible without a heroic effort each time: a portfolio under his name, a regular place to present, clear credit on shared projects.
    Movement work
Social tango evenings, leading partners he does not know, where there is no rehearsal and no one to hide behind.
    Experiment
He presents his own work at a monthly review and keeps a record of what he wanted to hide and what he showed.
    Review point
The route is reviewed every six weeks and adjusted to what he is actually living, not to a plan made in advance.

    Key insight

Still open: whether he can stay visible on the days when the work is imperfect.

    Read the full portal

The next task is to make visibility ordinary. A few brave presentations do not yet add up to a way of working. He is building structures that hold his work in view without requiring him to overcome the same fear every morning: a portfolio under his own name, clear credit on shared projects, a regular place to show what he is making.

Consultations and movement work keep testing an old question in new situations. Can he be seen when the work is unfinished, when someone disagrees, when he has made a mistake in front of others? The goal is not to become someone who enjoys the spotlight. It is to stop organising his professional life around the avoidance of it.

The tango laboratory has moved to social evenings. He leads partners he has never danced with, with no rehearsal and no one to stand behind. We watch what happens when a step goes wrong in public: whether he apologises and shrinks, or stays in the embrace and proposes the next one. Each month he also presents his own work at a team review and keeps a short record of what he wanted to hide and what he showed. Those notes, not a feeling of progress, are what the route is reviewed against.

The result of this portal is still being lived.
