Case 03 · Illustrative case · In progress

He betrayed me. Why was I still afraid to leave?

The hidden cost of safety: a route toward financial independence.

Architect · 42

A pencil and gold ink sketch: a tangled knot of lines loosens, gathers into a drawn floor plan, and rises along a marked path toward a built house.

The four portals are stages of transformation, not four individual sessions.

  1. I

    Portal I

    The Fool

    Energy: meeting the fear

    Key insight

She could name the fear beneath her decision and began building trust in her own capacity to move through uncertainty.

    Read the full portal

We began with psychoanalytic consultation and an Inner Forces map. We traced what happened whenever she considered leaving: fear of financial instability, an urge to restore closeness, then a decision to postpone her own choice. She had described this as love. When she looked more closely, she recognized how much of her staying was tied to the security of their arrangement.

That discovery was painful, but it released energy previously spent defending a story she no longer believed. She could acknowledge the value of their shared years, and begin to forgive her husband, without forcing herself to call the marriage a love she did not feel.

She chose climbing as her first movement laboratory. In each session, we observed how she found the next hold, shifted her weight and responded when the route seemed impossible. We repeatedly brought those observations back to consultation: when did she search for someone else to guarantee the outcome? What support could she find in the step available now? Gestalt-informed experiments helped her notice the moment fear became an automatic plea for reassurance.

Outside the laboratory, she tried small unfamiliar actions on her own. The aim was not to convince her she needed nobody. It was to let her experience herself making choices without first securing her husband's protection.

  2. II

    Portal II

    The Magician

    Form: withdrawing the projection

    Key insight

The energy awakened in a relationship took a form she had created herself. The new man could be a person in her life, without having to become its source.

    Read the full portal

As she became more alive, she met a man who encouraged her curiosity and admired her work. She felt seen in a way she had missed for years. Soon she began to believe that he was the reason she could imagine another life.

The connection was real, but it also exposed a familiar pattern. Once again, her sense of possibility seemed to depend on whether a man remained close. Through consultation and Gestalt work, she separated what she actually knew about him from the freedom and courage she had placed onto him.

We asked a practical question: what continues to matter to her on a day when he does not call?

The answer began with drawings she had kept private: a concept for an overlooked public space. She developed the sketches into a proposal under her own name. In movement improvisation, she practised initiating an action, receiving a response and staying connected to her original intention. We examined the same movement in her professional conversations.

  3. III

    Portal III

    The Chariot

Direction: turning freedom into a plan

    Key insight

Leaving became more than an emotional decision. She had a divorce decision, an income goal and a roadmap she could follow and revise.

She decided to divorce. That decision did not remove her fear of abandonment or financial insecurity. It made the next task unavoidable: build a route toward independent income.

Together, we set a financial goal and developed a staged roadmap for her bureau: establish her current income and obligations; identify the work that brought reliable revenue; price and present her own architectural proposal; approach potential clients; review results at agreed checkpoints; and adjust the next stage according to what was actually earning, rather than what she hoped might earn. Each stage received a timeframe, a required action and a way to measure progress.

We also worked with the anger she had been turning against herself. In consultation, she noticed when a client's refusal felt like abandonment and when she responded by lowering her price or withdrawing a proposal. Martial movement practice offered a place to investigate stance, directed force and recovery after a missed action. We then tested what she learned in real conversations: stating a fee, hearing a no, making a counterproposal and keeping her goal in view.

    The Emperor

    Structure: making independence sustainable

    Read the full portal

Her next task is to turn a series of courageous actions into a stable way of living and working. She is clarifying finances, defining roles in the bureau and building processes so that revenue does not depend on her accepting every request or doing every task herself.

Consultations and movement work continue to test an old question in new situations: can she accept support without surrendering her choices? The goal is not to prove that she needs no one. It is to build enough financial, professional and inner structure that a relationship can be a choice rather than a condition of safety.

The result of this portal is still being built.
